Utility Week executed a swift digital pivot during the pandemic and developed an incredibly effective series of campaigns which saw commercial success for the brand, but also supported their clients and kept them connected during a time when many other routes were closed. Build Back Better and Countdown to COP26 were two standout examples of new digital offerings which were extremely successful for this brand and helped secure them as the winner in this fiercely competitive category.

This resulted in impressive growth, while keeping members fully supported and engaged throughout the pandemic.

The judges called this an outstanding digital product development, and one which shows true creativity, agility and innovation during an extremely challenging time for this industry. The product design allows for scalability and by combining expert content and commerce, the result is a superb ‘one stop shop’ for those interesting in cruising. One judge said this is “a great story of triumph in the midst of adversity”.

This brand has done an incredible job of highlighting a range of diverse voices via the magazine and extension products such as the podcast. Women’s Running not only provides a platform for people to share their diverse experiences and stories, but also actively encourages the brands they work with to live up to their expectations, so that over time diverse and inclusive content is nothing out of the ordinary.

Sophie demonstrates an impressive commitment to supporting the travel industry and manages to get key issues on the mainstream news agenda. Judges were extremely impressed by the campaigning on behalf on the travel industry, and said this was a shining example of brand evolution changing to fit its audience needs, especially in the midst of COVID and with such lack of clarity around travel and safety.

The judges were hugely impressed by how this event helped to position The Stage as an industry leader, allowing it to support the theatre industry while demonstrating an excellent commercial performance. 59 of the industry’s most influential performers and voices joined the event to deliver powerful keynote speeches and exclusive interviews to discuss the future of the theatre industry, one that has been extremely hard hit by the pandemic. This event was the first of its kind to bring the entire theatre sector together since the start of the pandemic, with one judge describing it as “cutting edge”.

Judges loved how striking and imaginative this cover is, while also staying relevant to its roots way back in the first edition. Well-executed both in print and digital, this cover “shouts ELECTRIC and is absolutely breath-taking”, according to one of our judges.

Faversham House didn’t just pivot their business, they did so in a way that was agenda-setting, bold enough to invest during a time when others haven’t, and also pushed forward their sustainability goals. This company clearly adapted well to the challenges of the pandemic and have focused on supporting its partners by, delivering high levels of service at a difficult time, which has resulted in a very loyal customer base. The team should be very proud of its performance, and judges were impressed to see the continued importance placed on its people, sustainability and general purpose.

The impressive speed at which Newsstand developed a cost & time saving solution for publishers in light of the VAT changes is a huge achievement. Judges admired the ingenuity and determination of this relaunch driven by necessity and a wish to stay relevant in the 21st century. This relaunch is a real turnaround from its situation as COVID struck with one judge saying “this is a perfect example of how adversity can be turned into opportunity”.

The judges were impressed with the commercial performance of Dezeen but also the establishment of their climate leadership credentials, which sees the company pledge to become a net-zero business by 2025. Throughout the pandemic, Dezeen showed incredible agility, pivoting and launching new content and events digitally for its audience. These new initiatives and clever thinking, saw Dezeen achieving record-breaking traffic which resulted in the strong financial performance.

Heart Matters is an extremely important resource to the community it serves, giving readers up-to-date information about how Covid related to their condition. This is a fantastic example of how important media can be to someone’s life and the positive impact it can have. Bringing the publication in-house was a bold and brave move, but one that has really paid off and given the team more control over what is communicated.

Maximising Revenue Generation from Free Content Sampling

This team achieved an incredible amount in a short space of time, establishing a digital-only platform with an impressively quick shift from print when the circumstances of the pandemic were outside its control. Judges appreciated the clever mechanism for giving away content free but hooking readers in with one paid story to tempt them to subscribe to the paywall. Creative, innovative and proves that an idea doesn’t have to be complicated to have a big impact.

London Review of Books
This was the team to beat in this hotly contested category and judges unanimously decided that the trophy should go to this small but mighty team from LRB. The team saw incredible results, which were even more impressive given how much of a challenging year it was for publishers working remotely. This entrepreneurial team bravely forged into unknown territories to find new revenue streams and worked collaboratively to create effective marketing campaigns to expand the LRB readership and support the wider business.

Tim’s writing was described by judges as compelling and engaging, with a beautiful style. Judges were impressed with how these well-researched and characterful reviews both engage and inform the audience, while also positioning The Stage as a leading voice for the theatre industry as it recovers post-pandemic – a very difficult balance to achieve.

Special Recognition Award
This special award was created by the PPA after judges across multiple panels commended TTG Media for such incredible resilience, innovation and determination in the face of huge adversity for the travel industry during the pandemic. When travel came to a complete standstill in 2020 the response from the TTG team was fearless. They launched a number of new campaigns including #savetravel and #holidaytohelpout and campaigned tirelessly at parliament to help protect their industry and the jobs within it. The company also saw the development of its new paid-for membership programme called TTG+ and in April 2021 launched the inaugural ‘Travel Industry Awards’.
What truly remarkable achievements – TTG Media is a true champion for its sector.
